CHENNAI: A special court for narcotics cases in Chennai has sentenced two women and a man to 12 years of imprisonment for smuggling 101 kg of ganja in 2019. The court imposed a total fine of Rs 5.1 lakh on the convicts identified as Jayanila, 50, Kaliyammal, 60, and Sivakumar, 33.
Based on a tip-off, Narcotic Intelligence Bureau-CID sleuths intercepted the trio when they arrived at Chennai Central rail station on the Alappuzha-Chennai Express train on July 17, 2019.

Jayanila and Sivakumar carried two polythene bags filled with 40 kg of ganja each. Kaliyammal carried 21 kg of ganja in a bag. They were booked under sections of the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act and arrested. The chargesheet was filed on December 12, 2019.
Principal special judge of EC and NDPS court C Thirumagal pronounced the verdict on Tuesday. “The contraband is of commercial quantity and hence 12 years jail time is given to each of them along with a fine of Rs 1.7 lakh each. The total fine amount is Rs 5.1 lakh,” the judge pronounced.
Special public prosecutor K J Saravanan argued the case.
